On the ‘Gloriavale Commune’ in India

Introduction

A background to this Post can be read on Indiafacts site here. For the sake of brevity, we shall use the same acronyms: GCC for Gloriavale Christian Community-New Zealand, CCC for Christian Church Community, Thiruviruttanpulli, Ambasamudram Taluka, Thirunelveli District (TN/076030358), SHCT for Smile Help Charitable Trust-Vijayawada (AP/10260339) and DF for Dohnavur Fellowship, Thirunelveli District (TN/076030011).

Recent Developments

We came across a recent investigative report which appeared in a New Zealand MSM here. MSM in NZ has been focussing on alleged abuses and other individual rights violations in Gloriavale. Naturally, they are not interested in the expansion of Gloriavale commune to India, as they (like most in the West) believe in Universal Religious Freedom, a synthetic concept which is alien and dangerous to Indian traditions. The NZ report, an excellent one (Kudos to the investigative journalist, Ms. Morgan Tait), obtained through their Right to Information Act provides details of investigations carried out by NZ’s Charities Services in 2015.

For relevance to us in that report are these: (a) The Gloriavale Trust in NZ is actually registered as “Christian Church Community Trust (CC25088) and (b) Money donated to Indian FCRA-NGOs is sent from a Bank account called GCC which contains private, post-tax money of individuals belonging to the Commune, but operated by the Trustees of CC25088.

Let us now take a look at the money transactions between all the above entities, as examined via FCRA returns.

Table 1: Remittances from GCC, New Zealand to FCRA-NGOs. Amount in Rs. lakh. Data from fcraonline.nic.in

Interestingly, FCRA returns also show that CCC remitted, amounts of Rs. 14.5 and 21 lakhs in 2014 and 2015 respectively to DF. Such give-and-take between RoL FCRA-NGOs is quite common in India.

Who runs Christian Church Community, Thiruviruttanpulli, Ambasamudram Taluka?

A sentence in the Indiafacts article said “Who owns CCC is not known in the public domain.” Although the Indian Government (ideally the State Governments must be putting out such information, but they are all invariably inert to these matters anyway) should eventually put this information on the Darpan portal of Niti Aayog, it is possible for us to figure this out in another manner.

The newly formatted FC4 return for FCRA-NGOs requires the signature of the Chief Functionary of the FCRA-NGO to be uploaded. The same for CCC (TN/76030358) can be seen at the FCRA website of the Ministry of Home Affairs, say, for the year 2015-16. The signature is screenshotted from the FC4 return of CCC and is reproduced here:

ccc_sign.png

The signature of the Chief Functionary of CCC in Thiruviruthanpulli says “Faithful Stronghold (FS)”. That name is quintessentially Gloriavalish (Google up for their naming schemes) and not a common name in Tamil Nadu.

Who is Faithful Stronghold?

Faithful Stronghold used to be called as Kottapalli Mahesh Babu (KMB). How do we know this?

Let us check out Page No. 40, Right Column of Part-IV, Section 4 of the Tamil Nadu Government’s Gazette published on November 9, 2011. It is available here. The same is reproduced below.

 kmb_gazette.png

So, Kottapalli Mahesh Babu affirms that he got converted to Christianity in September 2003 and received the name Faithful Stronghold. He declares the same in November 2011. The address provided in the Gazette is the same as that of CCC. Given that CCC came into existence only in 2011/2012, it is likely that Faithful Stronghold was living elsewhere. In Gloriavale commune, New Zealand? May be. We do not know for sure. But it appears that he exercised his Religious Freedom to get converted from Hinduism to Christianity in Gloriavale, NZ, given the nature of his name. Note also that he was born in 1991 and was converted in 2003, i.e., at the age of 12.

Indian students travelling to Gloriavale, New Zealand: Circa early-mid 2000s

There is an additional peripheral story which suggests that Mahesh Babu could have become Faithful Stronghold in New Zealand.

Read these news stories:

  1. Hindustan Times, October 16, 2006

  2. The Press, Christchurch, October 14, 2006

Venkata Siva Rayavarapu, aged 22 was met by a Gloriavale guy in Hanuman Junction, Vijayawada.

He was sponsored by Gloriavale to travel to New Zealand to study English, agriculture & community life. Gloriavale also helped his family in India. However, in 2006, he escaped from Gloriavale, breaking the contract that his father and he had signed with Gloriavale. The reason? He was being asked to marry a Mexican inmate of Gloriavale Commune. One of the leaders of  Gloriavale, Fervent Stedfast mentions that Rayavarapu wanted to marry only a New Zealander inmate as that would fetch him NZ residency.

Is there an equivalence between the initial trajectories of Kottapalli Mahesh Babu and Venkata Siva Rayavarapu? Although KMB’s new address is in rural Thirunelveli, his name and his village name (Kottapalli) are dead giveaways of his Andhra/Telangana lineage. Also his father’s name (Kottapalli Pullaiah). Same is true for Rayavarapu. The mention of Hanuman Junction in the MSM stories also point to a Andhra link.

It is well known that many students leave India to study abroad. Even to New Zealand. Even to Gloriavale! This is due to several entry barriers imposed by all Governments in India in the Education sector. Let us not digress ….

It is known that Gloriavale had only 55 families (each with about 8 children). Thus, were poor, willing but gullible Hindu students from India attracted by Gloriavale leaders to settle down there to increase its population? For long term sustainability and/or evolutionary reasons? We do not know. We would probably never know.

Summary

We are quite dissatisfied with what has been going on. And, what is going on. With FCRA. With all sorts of cults mushrooming in our Bhoomi. As usual, we wring our hands in despair.

Secular Causes?

In a Post on Emperor Julian, Scholar-blogger Manasataramgini says:

In modern India, again under the toxicity of secularism the government allows subtle and covert Galilaean memes to be broadcast on television, thereby softening the population for the action of the churches and NGOs

Let us see a news item that appeared on 29th June 2016.

The Hindu: Rallies mark Day Against Drug Abuse

Dinamani (Tamil): குமரியில் உலக போதை விழிப்புணர்வு ஜோதி ஓட்டம்

Dinathanthi (Tamil): குளச்சலில் போதை ஒழிப்பு விழிப்புணர்வு பேரணி

Rallies to increase awareness on drug abuse were organized in Kanyakumari district say all the headlines. Who organized it? Various “social” organizations belonging to the Kottar Diocese. The inaugural function was presided by the Parish Priest of Thuya Alankara Ubakara Madha Church. Later, a function was organized where a book on Drug Abuse was released. It was presided by the Kottar Diocese Bishop and Justice Selvam of Chennai High Court was the Chief Guest. Christhu Church Parish Priest Neon Nelson, Public Prosecutor A. Gnanasekar and Chief Education Officer V. Jayakumar participated in the book release function.

The Dinamani article mentions that the awareness run with the torch started in Kanyakumari culminated at the St. Aloysius School, Nagerkovil. Students of St. Anthony’s school ran with the torch.

The Dinathanthi story describes a similar rally organized in Colachel on behalf of “New Life Home”. This rally ended in St. Mary’s Primary School.

Following are FCRA-NGOs with Kottar, Nagerkovil in their addresses:

  1. Roman Catholic Diocese of Kottar (TN/75890004)
  2. Kottar Social Service Society (TN/75890021)
  3. Partnerschaft Kottar (Feast) (TN/75840023)
  4. Friends of Kottar, Annai Vellankanni College Premises (TN/75890080)
  5. Shanti Nivas Charitable Religious Social Welfare Society, Moritz Nagar (TN/75840031) (Organization of Franciscan brothers)
  6. Stella Maris Institute of Development Studies (TN/75890273)
  7. Popular Educational Trust (TN/75840012)

Mose Ministries, Tiruchirappalli. News Stories & beyond

Mose Ministries, Tiruchirappalli was founded and run by a Pastor Gideon Jacob. It is not FCRA-ed. It was predominantly funded via a Hamburg Bleeding Heart Christian “NGO” called Christliche Initiative fur Indien (CIFI). Since the publications of adverse reports on Mose Ministries, and the Court hearings and outrages of Indian citizens on twitter, CIFI’s website is forbidden for view over the last few months. However, relevant pages are available on archive. For instance, see: http://web.archive.org/web/20160210045322/http://www.cifi.de/

Pastor Gideon Jacob appears to be running Mose Ministries, Tiruchirappalli via a Company (likely Sec. 25, as can be seen from Part-5 of its CIN which stands as NPL). The name of the company is: Good Shepherd Evangelical Mission Private Limited and its  CIN=U93090TN1974NPL006617. The same is also provided in the CIFI website (see archive here). The Directors are Gideon Jacob and Ute Jacob and the address is given as: 20-C, C-Block, Main Street, Anna Nagar, Chennai (no surprises in finding it in Anna Nagar, which is the Headquarters of neo EJs in Chennai, closely competing with Kilpauk). A screenshot of the details of the company from MCA is provided below.

Check out this newspaper article (September 2015) for the genesis of this story. Essentially, this orphanage housed around 89 girls of all ages, were raising them as believers and also obedient to their Pastor. Advocate Geeta further said: “the children were mentally conditioned into believing that they were all rescued by the pastor from their biological parents over fears of infanticide.” The “Children’s Home” of Mose Ministries did not have any registration with Government (Author’s note: Not that it makes any difference).

The Madurai bench of the Madras/Chennai High Court was hearing a petition filed by a good NGO, Change India in this regard. In January 2016, it directed CBI to investigate Mose Ministries and specifically the abuse of the children there. The Court asked CBI to file a report to it on the issue. The news also mentions “Some parents have submitted petitions to the collector claiming the children in the home were theirs.” It is thus clear that many of the inmates were not technically orphans, but were probably being held in the “Children’s Home” to extract money from Evangelicals and Bleeding Heart Liberals  abroad. Such “orphanages” also help in raising new troops of foot soldiers (so called native pastors) for purposes of “reaching” and “saving” millions of Indian souls in the coming decades.

In April 2016, CBI filed a status report to the Court and obtained permission to file the final report by August 2016.

Meanwhile, this news story today, says that Change India submitted to the Court that Pastor Gideon Jacob freely goes abroad. Further, no DNA tests have been conducted on the children and their biological parents, yet. These effectively convey the impression that nothing much seems to have happened in this case since January 2016.

To rebut the above, CBI submitted “due to difficulties stated in the status report (that CBI had submitted to the Court earlier), the CBI was unable to investigate him (Pastor Gideon Jacob). Besides, the inmates were not cooperating in the investigation

It should be noted that the children (including around 50 minors) staged a road blockade during Christmas of 2015 and demanded that they be allowed to celebrate it along with Pastor Jacob. The Court had to organize an extraordinary skype meeting to guide the Police and District administration during that standoff.

The above chronology of incidents makes it clear that (i) the children appear not to be in a state of independent thinking, (ii) the CBI is unable to make much progress due to unknown reasons and that (iii) Pastor Jacob has been having a free run.

While I am curious how this will pan out, I also fear that as many things with RoL, this too shall pass. Particularly because, it is in Tamil Nadu. Needless to state, India is fast catching up with Tamil Nadu.

June 29, 2016, Update: The Hindu reports that the “Special Public Prosecutor for Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) cases, told the court that the inmates of the home were not cooperating in the investigation ordered by the High Court”.

July 08, 2016, Update: The Hindu reports that blood samples of inmates of Mose Ministries were collected by the Government Hospital staff so as to carry DNA testing to match against those of their parents. Interestingly, the story also adds that CBI carried out a “search” in the Children’s Home as well as a “few other places“. Now, now, what would these be?

July 27, 2016, Update: Times of India reports that blood samples of six couples and three individuals who claimed to be parents of the “orphans” kept in Mose Ministries were collected. It also mentions that 34 people have claimed to be parents of the Mose children so far. It is hoped that their samples too will be collected over time. Importantly, TOI also reports Pastor Gideon Jacob had taken some of the girls (“orphans”) to Germany and Poland based on passports issued with the consent of social welfare department officials of Tiruchirappalli. In our considered opinion, the operations of this department in Tamil Nadu needs to be thoroughly checked.

Additional FCRA-NGOs receiving funds from Gospel For Asia Inc

Indiafacts had broken a story on Gospel For Asia Inc (GFAI), Texas in September 2014. The story revealed two vital pieces of information which were until then unknown in public:

  • GFAI had established 11 Limited Liability Companies (LLC) in Texas

  • Four FCRA-NGOs, all located in the Pathanamthitta district of Kerala
were exclusively funded either by GFAI or by these LLCs. These were:
Gospel For Asia (GFA), Believers Church India (BCI), Last Hour
Ministry (LHM) and Love India Ministries (LIM)

This story was followed up extensively and comprehensively by blogger, Prof. Warren Throckmorton here, which culminated in a lawsuit filed by US-based former donors to GFAI which has been covered well in US media.

That a few more FCRA-NGOs have declared remittances from GFAI and its LLCs since 2013-14 has now come to light. The following Table lists them, based on data found at the FCRA website.

Thus, in the third quarter of Financial Year (FY) 2015-16 alone, these new FCRA-NGOs  together have received a whopping sum of Rs. 53,21,54,811 (Rupees Fifty Three Crore Twenty One Lakh Fifty Four Thousand Eight Hundred and Eleven only) from LLCs associated with GFAI. They did not receive any money from anyone else either in 2015-16 or in the previous years. The above data can be accessed by anyone from the FCRA Website of the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA). The complete data for FY 2015-16 can be obtained only after these FCRA-NGOs file their FC4 return (due by December 31, 2016). However, the data for the last quarter, i.e., Jan-Mar. 2016 should be available online, hopefully in June 2016.

It will also be interesting to know whether these FCRA-NGOs received similar substantial amounts in the previous two quarters of FY 2015-16. It is to be noted that MHA recently tightened the reporting norms for both FCRA-NGOs as well as for Banks. MHA had also established the procedure for the submission of Quarterly Returns, whose publication online enabled us to figure out the above details on these mysterious five FCRA-NGOs which happened to have received large sums of money from GFAI.

At this point in time, the existence of these five FCRA-NGOs has come to light. Whether any more FCRA-NGOs have received funds from GFAI is unknown, as yet.

It is our fervent hope that the people of India will awaken to the living reality of evangelistic forces inimical to our Nationhood and Culture, fostered by liberal funds from abroad transmitted via FCRA.

P.S.: Screenshots of returns are not provided as these data are made freely available online by the Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India and are accessible to anyone at fcraonline.nic.in.
